Lasers are now used in a variety of procedures that involve removing the top layer of skin to create a smoother appearance, or to remove discolorations.
Age spots, which are brownish pigmentations that generally appear on the face and hands, can be treated by laser in the office. However, some pigmented lesions may need to be biopsied or removed surgically.
Lasers allow us to target the top layer of skin precisely, eliminating or softening fine lines, sun damage, and scarring from acne. A laser procedure can be done alone, or as a supplement to a facelift or other facial plastic surgery. Treatment can be applied all over the face, or only in specific areas. The skin regenerates within 7 to 10 days, leaving a mild redness that gradually fades in anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks and sometimes moe. The overall effect is a tighter, smoother, more youthful appearance.
Small spider veins, which are usually located on the face and/or legs, can be effectively treated with the laser at Gateway Dermatology. This procedure is generally performed in the office, with no anesthesia required. Larger or more difficult veins may require further treatment including sclerotherapy by Dr. Yearsley.
The laser can be very effective at removing tattoos. However, multiple treatments may be necessary. We tend to excise very small tattoos and refer larger tattoos to a medical center that has a large practice in removing tattoos and specializes in this therapy.
